Ross Records Academy — Professional Film Scoring Education
Film Scoring Templates in Cubase
Build the professional template system that working composers use on real films — under real deadlines. Stop starting from scratch. Start scoring faster.
$297 AUD · Founding student rate for first 20 enrolments
Full launch price: $497 AUD
Every new project starts the same way — routing tracks, loading instruments, configuring your mixer. Hours gone before a single idea lands on paper.
Universities teach harmony and orchestration. Nobody teaches you how a professional scoring session is actually built — the architecture behind the music.
Directors need cues. Producers need delivery dates. When your workflow isn't ready, your creative output isn't either. A professional template changes everything.
Watch Before You Enrol
See exactly what's inside — and how it works on a real film scoring session.
Imagine This Instead
Your orchestral template is loaded. Your expression maps are configured. Your routing is clean. Your key commands are set. You open the film, drop to the first cue — and you start composing. That's what this course builds for you.
This isn't about learning Cubase. It's about building the professional infrastructure that lets you stop thinking about your tools — and start thinking about your music.
What You'll Master
The exact key commands used by LA-based and international working composers — imported directly into your workflow from day one.
Build a fully professional scoring template using only free libraries: Spitfire LABS, BBC Symphony Core, Berlin Free Orchestra, HALion Sonic, and more.
Set up Kontakt multi-instances, articulation layers, and a template architecture that holds up on professional projects without crashing your session.
Virtual multi-microphone positions across all your major libraries — close, tree, outrigger, ambient — routed cleanly and ready to blend.
Build and use Expression Maps properly: every articulation at your fingertips, switchable with a single keypress, no more hunting through menus mid-session.
Professional mix groups, sum buses, FX channels, and stem print streamers — so your deliverables are clean and your mix is translation-ready.
Sync to picture professionally from the first session. Correct frame rates, broadcast WAV export, and 2-pop integration done right.
For composers working in streaming, broadcast, or theatrical — a complete surround-capable template variant with Control Room configuration and routing.
Course Structure
The course develops progressively — from DAW configuration and free templates through to complex multi-mic setups, surround sound, and live real-world scoring sessions.
Your Instructor
Film Composer & Co-Founder, Ross Records
Leon Ross is a screen composer, music producer, and co-founder of Ross Records — a Melbourne-based studio known for a bold and versatile cinematic voice, with credits spanning Netflix, Universal Pictures, Amazon Prime, and Screen Australia.
His work has earned an IndieFest Best Score award alongside nominations from AACTA, the Australian Screen Sound Guild, and Ozflix — and his scores have reached audiences across the world's leading streaming and theatrical platforms.
Beyond composing, Leon has spent years teaching film scoring at university level — mentoring 200+ student composers through the full process of writing music for real films, from brief to final delivery. It was in those classrooms that the gap became obvious. Traditional music education teaches theory, harmony, and orchestration. Nobody teaches the working infrastructure. The template architecture that professional composers rely on every single day was never part of the curriculum.
Your Soundtrack Blueprint is the course Leon built to close that gap — drawing directly from the systems he developed and refined across hundreds of real projects under real deadlines.

What Students Say
"I've been using Cubase for six years and I still learned things in the first unit I wish I'd known on day one. The key command setup alone saved me hours on my next project."
— John T. · Melbourne · Composer & Music Producer
"The expression maps section completely changed how I work with orchestral libraries. I used to dread switching articulations mid-session. Now it's completely seamless."
— Sarah K. · Sydney · Film & Game Composer
"I came in as an intermediate Cubase user. By Unit 3 I had a professional template I'm now using on every project. The multi-mic routing alone was worth the price."
— Daniel R. · Brisbane · Screen Composer

Common Questions
Do I need to own a full version of Cubase to take this course?
Unit 2 is specifically designed to work with the free Cubase Trial alongside free instrument libraries — so you can follow along without any upfront software cost. For Units 3 and 4, Cubase Pro or Artist is recommended to access the full feature set (expression maps, advanced routing). If you're serious about film scoring, Cubase Pro is the industry standard and a worthwhile investment.
What sample libraries do I need? Is this expensive?
Not necessarily. The entire Unit 2 is built around free libraries — Spitfire LABS, BBC Symphony Core (free tier), Berlin Free Orchestra from Orchestral Tools, HALion Sonic, and Native Instruments free products. You can build a completely functional professional template at zero cost. Units 3 and 4 introduce paid libraries like Kontakt instruments, but you can follow the architecture and apply it to whatever libraries you already own.
I'm already a working composer. Is there anything here for me?
Yes — and this is one of the most common reactions from beta testers with professional experience. Units 4 and 5 go deep into multi-mic template architecture and surround sound configuration that most working composers have never fully implemented. The Expression Maps unit alone has transformed the workflow of composers who have been using Cubase for years. If you've been building templates ad-hoc over the years and know they could be cleaner — this is the rebuild you've been putting off.
What skill level do I need before starting?
This course is designed for intermediate and above. You should be comfortable navigating a DAW, have a basic understanding of MIDI, and ideally have some experience with music production or composition. Complete beginners to digital audio workstations will find the pace challenging. If you know your way around a session and want to take your workflow to a professional level — this is built for you.
What if I use Logic, Pro Tools, or another DAW?
The course is built entirely in Cubase, and the specific setups — expression maps, key commands, routing — are Cubase-specific. That said, the underlying principles of template architecture, multi-mic routing, stem printing, and workflow organisation are transferable to any professional DAW. Many students have used the course to inform rebuilds of their Logic or Studio One templates.
How long does the course take to complete?
There's no deadline — you have lifetime access. Many students work through it intensively over two to four weeks, pausing to implement each template before moving to the next unit. Others use it as a reference library they return to as their setup evolves. The Live Usage unit in particular is something students revisit repeatedly once they're working on real projects.
Some videos are listed as "coming soon" — when will they be available?
The course is fully launchable and the core content — all of Units 1, 2, and the majority of 3 and 4 — is complete and available immediately. The remaining lessons in the Complex Templates, Test & Innovate, and Live Usage units are being finalised and will be added over the coming weeks. Founding students receive all updates automatically and at no extra cost. You're not waiting for the course to be useful — it's useful from the first lesson.
Can I ask questions if I get stuck?
Yes. Every enrolled student has access to the Q&A section of the course, where you can ask questions directly. Leon reviews and responds personally. Film scoring template setup can get technical — the Q&A is there specifically for the moments where you need a human answer, not a forum thread from 2014.
Ready to Build It?
Build the template once. Use it on every film you ever score. The professional infrastructure behind the music — finally taught properly.
